IMPORTANT TITLE

The beginnings of Pama Futures can be traced back to 2000 with the social and economic reform agenda realised through the establishment of Cape York Partnerships with the Queensland Government. However, Cape York leaders have been agitating for change and demanding self-determination since the end of the church-run mission days.

For many decades, Cape York has led the way in regional reform activities, including several variations of partnership with State and Federal Governments.

Pama Futures remains the strongest way forward for the social, economic, and cultural development of the First Nations people of Cape York.

MORE INFORMATION

The people of Cape York want to control their future. They want PAMA Futures.

Indigenous leadership has flourished at both the community and regional levels. Emerging leaders have stepped up and continued the path of higher education to occupy positions of leadership in our organisations and communities. New industry is emerging. The old governance ways of ‘taking care’ of Indigenous communities is well and truly over. In its place is where you will find Pama Futures Backbone, led by community leaders, consulting community members on programs and services that will affect them.

Pama Futures represents our best chance at Closing the Gap on Indigenous disparity in Cape York. It represents the distillation of everything we have argued for almost two decades, all of the lessons we have learnt, all of the policy arguments we have won and lost, all of the initiatives that have succeeded and failed, and all the learnings we have accumulated in this period.

I just want to support everyone on the road ahead. This is my first Summit and I can see from 27 years ago to here now, it’s a great achievement. I’ve been talking to my grandfather, I’ve not known about this much before but I’d like to carry it on.

Summit 1

The absurd notion of Terra Nullius was under threat. That our land, was stolen was fast becoming accepted fact. The old people sensed the opportunity to right the wrong and get our land back. They knew that by doing that, our communities would one day be able to use our land to build prosperity for all Cape York people.
